OpenAI’s latest device

According to НВ — Техно: On July 17 at 9:00 PM, OpenAI announced plans to launch a battery-powered smart speaker equipped with a camera, sensors, and moving mechanical parts. Its standout feature is the ability to hold natural conversations, powered by the GPT-Live-1 voice model. This move comes as the smart speaker market faces a persistent decline in sales.

Market trends

After peaking in 2022 with over 100 million units shipped, smart speaker deliveries dropped by 16.3% in 2023. Forecasts indicate further decreases of 11.8% in 2024 and 6.7% in 2025, with analysts predicting a nearly 10% market contraction by the end of 2026.

Experts point to intense competition as a key factor behind the shrinking demand.

“Demand for smart speakers is consistently falling,” notes analyst Jitesh Ubrani. He adds that “building the device itself is not as hard as bringing it to a mass market already dominated by big players.”

Adding to the challenges, Amazon’s Alexa and Echo division reported a $3 billion operating loss in 2022. OpenAI itself is grappling with financial strain, losing $5.09 billion in 2024 and $38.5 billion in 2025. The company does not expect to achieve profitability until at least 2030.

Given the market downturn and significant financial losses, OpenAI faces steep hurdles in launching this new product, as reported by Engadget.

With demand for smart speakers waning, OpenAI’s new device may aim to capture consumer interest through innovative features. However, the company must overcome not only its own financial struggles but also fierce competition from established giants like Amazon and Google. These factors could be decisive as OpenAI tries to carve out a place in a smart speaker market that is navigating turbulent times.

As OpenAI ventures into the challenging smart speaker market, the advancements in their GPT-Live voice models with full-duplex capabilities could play a crucial role in setting their device apart. Understanding how these voice models enhance user interaction may provide insights into OpenAI's strategy to attract consumers amidst declining sales and fierce competition.
