Specifically, users on the free tier and on the Go plan will no longer face a cap on text-based questions starting the following week, meaning they can keep chatting without hitting a preset message ceiling. That said, restrictions tied to images, file uploads, voice interactions, and other non-text features are still in place.

These updates specifically affect conversations that are purely text-based. The default model for Free and Go accounts is shifting to GPT-5.6 Luna, which takes over from GPT-5.5 Instant (the default since May). A new 'Think' button will also appear in text chats, letting the model spend extra time crafting its answer. For regular text prompts, this feature won't consume any additional allowance.

Meanwhile, Plus and Pro subscribers are getting the upgraded flagship model, dubbed GPT-5.6 Sol, complete with a slider that lets them decide how long the model should deliberate before responding. In explaining the decision to eliminate text-prompt caps, OpenAI pointed to a broader goal of increasing access to its latest technology.
