Political and Business Groups Unite Against Tax Overhaul

According to Главком: The 'Batkivshchyna' (Fatherland) party and the nationwide #SaveFOP movement for small entrepreneurs have declared their readiness to resist recently announced tax reforms. A comprehensive bill expected to be submitted to parliament in March would introduce new taxes for private entrepreneurs (FOPs) and citizens. Opposition leaders point to their past successes in blocking similar initiatives and vow to continue their fight. This sets the stage for a significant political clash over Ukraine's economic direction.

In particular, Batkivshchyna leader Yulia Tymoshenko stated that the authorities have not abandoned their plans, which she considers cynical.

"The authorities have still not given up on the cynical idea of filling the budget not with taxes from the oligarchy, but with funds squeezed from the pockets of small entrepreneurs and ordinary Ukrainians,"

Tymoshenko emphasized. She added,

"This is their insane plan, which must be broken. And this means that our struggle with you continues!"

Key Provisions of the Proposed Legislation

The main changes outlined in the new law include:

  • Introducing a Value-Added Tax (VAT) for private entrepreneurs with an annual turnover exceeding 4 million hryvnias;
  • Taxing imported parcels valued up to 150 euros;
  • Implementing a 5% levy on sellers using digital marketplaces like OLX.

During a previous campaign, over one hundred thousand signatures were collected in opposition to these changes, and more than 200 local council resolutions were passed against imposing VAT on FOPs. In response, the government postponed its decision on introducing a 20% VAT for private entrepreneurs.

The opposition is determined and prepared for new protest actions to defend the interests of small businesses in Ukraine. The FOP system is a cornerstone of the Ukrainian economy, representing millions of self-employed individuals and micro-enterprises.

The situation surrounding tax changes for private entrepreneurs in Ukraine indicates rising tensions between the government and the small business sector. Given past protests and active public support, the opposition intends to mobilize resources to continue the fight. The introduction of new taxes could significantly impact the financial standing of small entrepreneurs, raising concerns about their ability to survive amid ongoing economic challenges. The unfolding events may well determine the future course of economic policy in Ukraine.
