Kramer's Parakeets in Chernivtsi

According to Главком: A colony of Kramer's parakeets (Psittacula krameri) continues to flourish in Chernivtsi's 'Zhovtnevy' Park, where they settled several years ago and have since successfully raised chicks. This species, known for its herbivorous diet, is the most numerous and widespread within the parrot family. Its popularity stems not only from its vibrant plumage but also from its remarkable ability to adapt to diverse climatic conditions.

These birds can withstand temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius, allowing them to remain comfortable even during cold winters. While Ukrainian winters have grown milder, the parakeets demonstrate impressive resilience. In Ukraine, populations are found not only in Chernivtsi but also in Lviv and Kyiv. These established flocks consist of individuals that escaped from captivity, highlighting their capacity to survive in wild urban environments. Their presence adds a surprising splash of color to the local fauna, a phenomenon increasingly observed in European cities.

An Exotic Touch for Ukrainian Cities

Named after the German naturalist Wilhelm Kramer, the Kramer's parakeet is becoming an increasingly common sight in Ukrainian cities, introducing an exotic element into the daily lives of residents.

The growing population of these parakeets in Ukraine reflects a broader global trend of exotic species adapting to new environments, a process potentially linked to climate change and rising temperatures. They not only enhance urban biodiversity but have also become a subject of interest for ornithologists and birdwatchers monitoring their development under novel conditions. It is quite likely that in the future, we will see even more such species successfully establishing themselves in Ukraine's urbanized zones.
