Inhaling Coffee Aroma for Five Minutes Eases Fatigue, Anxiety, and Negative Feelings in Young Adults
Exploring the Effects of Coffee Aroma
According to НВ — Техно: A study conducted at Showa Pharmaceutical University in Japan found that breathing in the scent of freshly brewed coffee for just five minutes helps reduce feelings of fatigue, anxiety, and negative emotions among young adults. Despite these mood improvements, the participants did not experience a significant boost in alertness, nor were there changes in heart rate. The experiment involved 20 students aged 20 to 29 who were exposed to coffee aroma without actually drinking the coffee.
Study Procedure
Researchers brewed 20 grams of ground coffee with 400 ml of water at 85 °C. The coffee was positioned about 50 centimeters from the participants, who inhaled its aroma for five minutes. After exposure, measurements indicated decreases in fatigue, anxiety, tension, depression, confusion, and sadness. However, heart rate and heart rate variability remained statistically unchanged, and participants did not report feeling notably more awake.
Electroencephalogram (EEG) readings showed a slight increase in relaxation indices, though these changes were minimal. Interestingly, mood improvements did not always correspond directly with shifts in brain activity, suggesting a complex interaction between aroma and psychological state. It is important to note that the study lacked a control group exposed to no scent or a different odor, which may limit the robustness of the conclusions.
Additionally, the sample was limited to 20 young students, without considering their coffee consumption habits or personal preferences regarding the scent. The authors emphasize the need for larger, randomized trials to validate these preliminary findings. Notably, a 2018 study revealed that coffee-like aromas can enhance performance on analytical tasks, hinting at potential cognitive benefits worthy of further exploration.
The findings could have practical applications in psychology and psychotherapy by supporting the use of aromatherapy to alleviate anxiety and negative emotions.
Nevertheless, the small sample size and absence of a control group highlight the necessity for more extensive research to confirm these effects. Such studies could pave the way for innovative mental health support strategies, especially relevant in today's high-stress environments.
In addition to its potential mood-enhancing effects, recent research indicates that coffee consumption may also be linked to lower body fat and increased muscle mass. This suggests that the benefits of coffee extend beyond mere aroma, raising interesting questions about its overall impact on health and fitness.
