Pedrinho's Stance on Nationality Switch

According to Главком: Shakhtar Donetsk's Brazilian winger, Pedrinho, has refuted rumors of potential contact from the Ukrainian national team regarding a switch of allegiance. The 27-year-old stated he only learned of the coaching staff's interest online and that no official approach was ever made. Pedrinho clarified that while his agents had mentioned the possibility, these reports were never backed by direct communication from the Ukrainian Football Association.

This speculation began in late January 2026 when ESPN reported the Ukrainian coaches' interest in the player. Pedrinho already has international experience, having played 13 matches for Brazil's U-23 side between 2019 and 2020, scoring 2 goals and providing 3 assists. In the current 2025/26 season, he has shown strong form for Shakhtar, netting 6 goals and making 9 assists across 25 appearances.

Ukraine's World Cup Qualification Path

The Ukrainian national team has completed the initial phase of qualification for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted across three North American nations. Their next challenge is a playoff semi-final against Sweden on March 26, 2026. A victory there would see them face the winner of the Poland vs. Albania match in the playoff final for a spot at the tournament. Ukraine heads into this crucial period with momentum, having recently secured a 5-3 victory over Iceland.

Addressing the possibility of playing for Ukraine, Pedrinho shared his personal considerations. He emphasized that any decision would be made with his career and family in mind.

“Playing in a World Cup is a dream. I have always dreamed of representing Brazil, but I would sit down with my family and consider if this would be beneficial for my development,” the player said.

Therefore, the question of his potential naturalization remains open and subject to further deliberation.

Pedrinho's situation highlights the complex nature of player naturalization, where personal ambition and sporting prospects are key factors. For its part, the Ukrainian national team is actively preparing for decisive World Cup qualifiers, a process that influences its recruitment strategy and search for new talent. Should Pedrinho ultimately decide in favor of a switch, he could become a significant asset for the squad.
