Subsidized travel for pensioners: when to present the card

The right to a subsidy exempts from paying the standard ticket, but in transport with validators, the trip needs to be confirmed electronically. For example, in Kyiv, they use the «Kyiv Card», in Lviv — the «LeoCard». The subsidized card must be registered in the system, and it needs to be presented to the validator during each trip.

If this is not done, the controller may consider the trip as traveling without a ticket, even when the passenger is entitled to a subsidy. Therefore, before the trip, it is worth checking if the card is valid and if the validator has read it. Regarding which transport has discounts, the rules may vary depending on the type of transport and local conditions.

Free travel for pensioners: where the subsidy has restrictions

The subsidized travel doesn't automatically apply to any transport. In private minibuses, the conditions depend on the agreements between the carrier and the local authorities, so it is better to clarify the possibility of traveling for free with the driver before boarding. There are no discounts in taxis, and there are separate rules for intercity and suburban routes.

The pensioner's ID confirms the right to a subsidy but does not replace a ticket or validation where required by the payment system.
