Tubal ligation - what it is and how it affects a woman's health
One of the important aspects of every woman's life is a rational approach to pregnancy planning, which includes reliable contraception. Modern medicine offers many options for avoiding unwanted pregnancy, and one of them is female sterilization. It is considered one of the most reliable methods, as it prevents conception with a probability of 90%.
The tubes are ligated, which prevents the egg from reaching the uterus, and pregnancy does not occur. The method is quite radical; after this procedure, it is impossible to restore the ability to conceive, so the decision made should be careful and justified.
When the decision for female sterilization is made
There is no clear list of indications for this intervention, as it cannot be prescribed without the desire of the patient herself. However, it is recommended in the following cases:
- The presence of multiple pregnancies in the history that ended with cesarean sections. In this case, the uterine wall is not elastic enough for carrying a child without difficulties. There is a very high risk of uterine rupture, so doctors recommend such a radical method of contraception.
- The woman has serious diseases. Some illnesses during pregnancy or childbirth may worsen and complicate. These can be heart defects, kidney failure, poorly controlled arterial hypertension, glaucoma, or severe myopia.
- Diagnosed serious mental illnesses. Such pathologies are very likely to prevent the patient from realizing the fact of pregnancy and motherhood. In order to avoid danger to the mother and fetus, it is better to prevent pregnancy in advance.
The main indication is the woman's desire to undergo sterilization. But before performing the procedure, the doctor must inform her about the possible risks.
What are the consequences of tubal ligation
Despite the advantages, there are also several dangers associated with sterilization:
- possible disruption of blood supply to the ovaries, leading to hormonal deficiency and the onset of menopause symptoms;
- the emergence of complications directly related to the operation: bleeding, infections, and inflammation;
- ectopic pregnancy - occurs very rarely;
- the impossibility of becoming pregnant if you change your mind.
It is also important to remember that this contraception does not protect against the development of STIs.
