Unveiling of the 'Strength of the Clan' Sculpture Ensemble

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: On November 5, 2026, a monumental sculpture named 'Strength of the Clan' was inaugurated near Khmilnyk in Vinnytsia region. This installation set a national record as the largest grouping of European bison sculptures displayed in one location in Ukraine. Positioned along the R-31 highway connecting Khmilnyk and Lityn, the artwork resides in the 'Zubr' tract, paying tribute to the majestic bison family.

Details of the Monument

The ensemble features five bison figures: a mature bull, a cow, and three calves. The tallest statue soars to 7 meters, and together they weigh close to 10 tons. This impressive scale earned the sculpture a spot in Ukraine’s national records under the category of the largest bison sculpture cluster on a single site. The project was funded by a charitable foundation and gifted to the Khmilnyk community as a symbol of strength and heritage.

European bison from the Uladivka subpopulation, a species listed in Ukraine’s Red Book, inhabit the nearby forests of Khmilnyk. Ukraine hosts a unique bison nursery established in 2016 within a mountainous enclosure in Bukovina, currently home to 16 endangered bison. Despite these conservation efforts, bison numbers in Ukraine have nearly halved since the early 1990s.

To aid in restoring bison populations, WWF-Ukraine launched a fundraising campaign titled '300 km Journey to Love and Save the Bison' within the Zalissia National Nature Park. Notably, this park endured over a month under Russian occupation in March 2022. Ukrainian ecological groups and scientists from the National Academy of Sciences have developed strategic plans to protect and revive the bison species nationally.

“The depiction of the family embodies the bond between generations, mutual support, and responsibility for the future,” emphasized Tetiana Dobrovolska.

The debut of 'Strength of the Clan' highlights the critical need to preserve biodiversity and promote environmental awareness in Ukraine. With the bison population declining, such initiatives play a vital role in educating the public and mobilizing resources for species protection. Additionally, the sculpture is expected to attract visitors, boosting local tourism and fostering appreciation for the region’s natural heritage.
