According to Главком: A severe winter storm is set to hit Ukraine on February 16, bringing freezing temperatures, snow, icy roads, and powerful winds. According to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, wind gusts across most of the country, excluding western regions, will reach 15-20 m/s, with a prevailing northwesterly wind of 7-12 m/s. This type of Arctic outbreak is not uncommon for mid-February, but it demands heightened caution.

Regional Temperature Breakdown

Temperatures will vary significantly depending on the region:

  • In western oblasts, as well as Zhytomyr and Vinnytsia oblasts, expect frost of 7-12°C below zero both day and night.
  • In the Carpathian region and northern Ukraine, temperatures will drop to 4-9°C below zero.
  • In most central oblasts and Sumy oblast, temperatures will range from 3°C above zero to 2°C below zero.
  • The east and southeast of the country will be warmer, with temperatures between 3-8°C above zero.

Kyiv Oblast is forecast to have cloudy weather with clear spells. Significant snowfall is expected at night, with possible light snow and icy conditions in some areas during the day. The wind in Kyiv Oblast will also be northwesterly, at 7-12 m/s with gusts of 15-18 m/s. Temperatures in Kyiv will be 7-9°C below zero both day and night, with possible snowstorms at night and in the morning.

The sharp drop in temperature and deteriorating weather conditions are likely to impact transport infrastructure and daily life, increasing the risk of road accidents due to ice.
