Poland's Stance on Ukraine's EU Accession

According to Главком: Poland has voiced its opposition to granting Ukraine accelerated membership in the European Union, insisting that Kyiv must complete the full accession procedure. This position was articulated by Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, who noted that while the European Commission has considered the idea of fast-track membership, Warsaw disagrees with this approach.

"He is saying what is also our position. The European Commission came up with the idea of accelerated membership. That will not happen. We believe Ukraine must fulfill all the conditions, just as we had to do," Sikorski emphasized.

Resistance from Key EU Nations

Poland is not alone in its stance; Hungarian politician Péter Magyar shares the position against Ukraine's accelerated EU entry. The push for Ukraine's rapid accession is facing resistance from several other key European Union member states, including:

  • France
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • The Netherlands

These nations similarly advocate for adherence to the standard accession protocols. The EU accession process is a complex and lengthy negotiation, designed to ensure candidate countries align fully with the bloc's laws and standards. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has stated that the EU cannot provide Ukraine with a specific date for membership. According to Radosław Sikorski, Ukraine will encounter particularly 'difficult chapters' during negotiations, such as agriculture and transport. Consequently, Ukraine's path to the European Union remains long and arduous, requiring the fulfillment of all necessary conditions.

The position held by Poland and other EU members underscores the importance of following established accession procedures, which is the traditional practice within the bloc. This indicates that despite strong political support for Ukraine, the actual integration process is likely to be protracted, demanding significant effort from the Ukrainian side to meet all required criteria.

As the debate over Ukraine's EU aspirations intensifies, it's essential to understand the broader context of opposition from multiple member states.
