Poland Halts MiG-29 Transfer to Ukraine After Kyiv Fails to Honor Drone Deal

Poland refuses to transfer MiG-29
Польща призупинила передачу літаків МіГ-29 Україні після невиконання Києвом угоди щодо безпілотників.

MiG-29 Fighter Jet Transfer Stalls

According to Главком: Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz has confirmed that Warsaw will not deliver MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine. The decision stems from Kyiv’s failure to uphold an agreement involving unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology, which had outlined a swap of jets for drones. According to Kosiniak-Kamysz, Ukraine initially accepted the proposal but ultimately did not meet the terms of the deal.

Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk backed this statement, noting that the transfer is on hold due to non-compliance with a bilateral pact on military technology exchange. Poland had planned to decommission its MiG-29 fleet by the end of December 2025. Kosiniak-Kamysz also emphasized that withholding the jets would not compromise Poland’s own defense capabilities.

'I proposed what I believe was a very partnership-based approach: MiGs in exchange for drones. The Ukrainians initially agreed, but they did not follow through. So there are no MiGs for Ukraine, because Poland lacks the drones or drone capabilities,' - Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz

The minister added that Ukraine should have shared its know-how and granted partial access to its technology, given their significant expertise in this field.

'They are truly very skilled in this area. They agreed to it, but then backed out of the arrangement,' - Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz

Officials also noted that the terms of the agreement have not yet been finalized, creating additional friction in cooperation between the two nations.

The Critical Role of Honoring Agreements

This standoff over MiG-29 deliveries underscores the importance of fulfilling military commitments between Ukraine and Poland. Failure to adhere to such pacts risks straining bilateral relations and could hinder joint defense initiatives. In the current security environment, continued collaboration on technology-especially the development of drone systems-remains vital for strengthening the defensive postures of both countries.

This ongoing situation highlights the broader challenges faced by European nations in coordinating military support amid rising tensions. As Poland emphasizes the need for compliance in defense agreements, it is crucial for Europe to address its own vulnerabilities. In light of this, Poland has called on its allies to expedite missile production to counter Russia, underscoring the urgency of strengthening collective security.
