According to УНІАН — Туризм: Located on the Baltic coast near the Hel Peninsula, the Polish village of Karwia sees up to 50,000 summer visitors each year-despite having only 987 permanent residents. Its natural beauty and well-developed tourist infrastructure have turned this small settlement into a popular seaside getaway.

Karwia offers a variety of accommodation options, including:

• guesthouses
• apartments
• campsites

Overnight rates at guesthouses or private apartments range from 1060 to 1420 UAH per person. Local restaurants also help make stays comfortable: breakfast at one establishment costs about 460 UAH, while the cheapest pizza is roughly 295 UAH. Coffee or tea at cafes runs from 140 to 210 UAH.

However, tourist numbers in Karwia are heavily weather-dependent. For instance, early July this year saw weaker turnout due to rainy conditions, which reduced visitor counts. Additional challenges included a two-week swimming ban caused by strong winds, high waves, and rip currents. One lifeguard remarked:

“If someone gets caught in a rip current, they should try swimming sideways, because fighting the current head-on is hopeless.”

Comparison with Other European Villages

Interestingly, Europe has other small settlements with similar tourist activity. For example, the French village of Châteauneuf-en-Auxois has only 76 permanent residents yet welcomes around 100,000 tourists annually. Its main attraction is a 12th-century castle about 20 meters high, which draws visitors from far and wide.

Despite weather challenges and seasonal fluctuations, Karwia remains a popular tourist destination.

Tourism in Karwia reflects broader trends among small coastal villages that can attract significant numbers of visitors even with tiny populations. As recent events show, weather conditions can greatly impact tourist flows, highlighting the need for local infrastructure to adapt to climate changes and seasonal hurdles. Nonetheless, the village continues to expand its tourism offerings, aiming to maintain steady interest from holidaymakers.
