Warsaw Accuses Zelensky of Deepening Tensions Over National Pantheon Proposal
Strained Relations Between Kyiv and Warsaw
According to Главком: Poland’s government has criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s plan to establish a Ukrainian National Pantheon, arguing it exacerbates the existing rift between the two capitals. On June 28, Ukraine’s Constitution Day, Zelensky submitted a bill titled 'On the Ukrainian National Pantheon' to the Verkhovna Rada. He had first announced the initiative to honor outstanding Ukrainians in April 2026.
While Polish officials were aware of the pantheon project in advance, they expressed surprise at Zelensky’s final decision. A member of Poland’s government commented:
“We knew for a long time that Zelensky would want to create a pantheon, but his words sound strange. I admit this caught us off guard.”
Another Polish official added:
“It’s a great pity that Zelensky acted this way. There was hope we could improve our relations, but now it seems things will get even worse. It’s important for us to protect Polish companies that want to do business in Ukraine, but Kyiv’s current policies do not help.”
Concerns Within the Polish Government
Poland’s prime minister also worries about the impact of Ukrainian agricultural products on the domestic market. As one Polish official noted, “Ukraine must remember that by fueling a dispute with Poland, it is harming itself.” Within the Polish government, there is a growing belief that Zelensky’s push for the Ukrainian National Pantheon is worsening Kyiv’s conflict with Warsaw.
This situation highlights the complexity of Ukraine-Poland relations, which have a history of tension. Despite shared goals-such as fostering economic cooperation and political stability in the region-such actions risk deepening divisions and complicating collaboration. Both sides must engage in constructive dialogue to minimize harm to bilateral ties and economic interests.
The ongoing tensions between Kyiv and Warsaw have been further complicated by recent actions taken by Zelensky, including his controversial decree regarding the UPA. This decision has led to significant diplomatic repercussions, such as the withdrawal of honors previously awarded to him by Poland.
