Estonia's Ambassador on Security and Backing Ukraine

According to Главком: In an exclusive interview, Anneli Kolk, the Estonian Ambassador to Ukraine, outlined her nation's perspective on the Russian threat, its own defense capabilities, and its unwavering support for Ukraine. She stressed the critical importance of international assistance, noting that Estonia provides one of the largest aid packages to Ukraine relative to its GDP among allied nations.

“We will not abandon helping Ukraine-this is the unanimous view of both our politicians and ordinary Estonians,” she emphasized.

Estonia's Defense and Security Posture

Estonia, which regained independence in 1991 after roughly 50 years of Soviet occupation, now spends nearly 5% of its GDP on defense.

“Our main victory is that Estonia managed to get rid of Russian military bases,” Kolk noted.

She also detailed the country's readiness for mobilization, stating that approximately 230,000 reservists could be called up if needed.

Kolk highlighted the vital role of NATO for Estonia's security:

“We rely on NATO and do not doubt our allies in the slightest.”

NATO, founded on April 4, 1949, remains Estonia's most powerful ally.

“We believe in NATO, and we are stronger together,” she added.

On social integration, Kolk pointed out that a Russian-speaking minority resides in Narva, many of whom hold passports of undefined citizenship. Estonia bans Russian television channels that promote propaganda. “I perceive this as part of Russian propaganda. This is a narrative Russians have been pushing for years to divide Estonian society,” the ambassador said.

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Estonia has accepted 89,000 Ukrainians, with 25,000 remaining in the country at the time of the interview. For Ukrainian children, Estonia opened a 'School of Freedom' taught by Ukrainian educators. “Absolutely. Most parties that will run in the 2027 elections are already represented in the Estonian parliament,” Kolk stated, commenting on the country's political landscape.

Anneli Kolk, with 27 years of diplomatic service, noted she will conclude her posting in Ukraine this summer and return to Estonia. “I am not an ambassador in Kyiv; I am the Ambassador of Estonia to Ukraine,” she remarked, underscoring her dedicated service to her country.

The ambassador's statements underscore the strategic support Estonia provides to Ukraine amid Russian aggression. Given Estonia's own historical experience with Soviet occupation, its firm stance in backing Ukraine carries significant weight. The nation's high defense spending and mobilization readiness reflect a serious commitment to its own security and regional stability, informed by a deep understanding of the threats posed by its neighbor.

In light of Estonia's steadfast commitment to supporting Ukraine, it's worth noting that the country has pledged over €100 million in defense assistance, reinforcing its role as a key ally. This substantial contribution reflects Estonia's proactive approach to security and its ongoing efforts to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities.
