EU Ambassador Suggests Russian Strike on Kyiv Hotel Housing Diplomats May Have Been Deliberate
Tragedy in Kyiv
According to Главком: In the early hours of July 2, the Russian military launched a large-scale combined assault on Kyiv, resulting in at least 13 fatalities and 84 injuries, according to official sources. EU Ambassador to Ukraine Kateryna Maternova has raised the possibility that the attack specifically targeted a hotel where foreign diplomats were staying. She emphasized that no diplomat has indicated any intention to leave Kyiv following the incident.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the site in Kyiv's Darnytskyi district. The strike destroyed 131 buildings and prompted over 100 people to seek assistance. Rescue teams managed to save 17 individuals. Reflecting on the devastation, Maternova noted,
“It felt as though a large portion of the city was on fire.”
She added,
“People spent the night in bomb shelters. Many of those who couldn't get there in time were killed or are now fighting for their lives in hospitals. For now, I fear the final death toll will be even higher.”
Aftermath of the Attack
The assault also destroyed a warehouse belonging to the Moyo electronics chain. In the broader Kyiv region, three men were injured, two of whom required hospitalization. July 3 was declared a day of mourning in the capital for the victims.
This strike ranks among the most devastating attacks on Kyiv since the conflict began, signaling an escalation of violence in the region and underscoring the risks faced by civilians and foreign diplomats alike. The international community's response to these events could shape future diplomatic efforts and support for Ukraine in countering aggression. Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities continue to manage the aftermath and provide aid to those affected.
The recent escalation in violence, marked by the devastating strike on Kyiv, has prompted Ukrainian President Zelenskyy to enhance diplomatic efforts in response to ongoing threats. This incident follows a series of attacks in the capital, including strikes on significant cultural sites.
