Obesity Drugs Found to Boost Testosterone in Men
Study Reveals GLP-1 Medications Impact Male Fertility
According to НВ — Техно: Findings presented on June 16 at 6:30 PM during the Endocrine Society’s annual conference in Chicago suggest that GLP-1 drugs offer promising benefits for overweight men. A systematic review highlighted that these medications not only raise or stabilize testosterone levels but also significantly improve sperm quality.
In one trial, obese participants with low testosterone took GLP-1 drugs for 16 weeks and showed positive outcomes. Another 24-week study involving men with type 2 diabetes reported that GLP-1 treatment doubled the proportion of morphologically normal sperm-from 2% to 4%. Notably, standard testosterone replacement therapy, often prescribed for such cases, tends to worsen sperm quality.
Treatment Implications
An analysis of medical records from over 1,600 patients in the United States revealed that after obesity treatment, testosterone levels increased by an average of 20–30%. Researchers explain that fat cells contain an enzyme that converts testosterone into estradiol, which may account for these results. Experts advise endocrinologists to avoid rushing into hormone therapy for men who are overweight and planning to have children.
“The data is still preliminary but extremely promising,” noted researcher Prathibha Natesh.
These findings open new avenues for treating overweight men, underscoring the role of GLP-1 drugs in boosting testosterone and enhancing sperm quality. They could significantly reshape approaches to managing fertility issues linked to obesity and drive further investigation in this area. Ultimately, these therapies may transform standard practices for men with low testosterone, improving their overall health and quality of life.
As researchers continue to explore innovative treatments for obesity-related health issues, it's worth noting that bariatric surgery has been shown to be significantly more effective than many leading medications. This approach not only aids in weight loss but may also offer substantial improvements in hormonal balance and overall health, further highlighting the importance of addressing obesity comprehensively.
