Special Council Appointed, Tusk Voices Criticism

According to Главком: Polish President Karol Nawrocki has established a special council tasked with drafting a new constitution, with a target completion date of 2030. The move has drawn sharp criticism from Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who argued that only nations that uphold their existing constitutions stand a chance of success. The council includes figures linked to the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, raising questions about its political alignment.

Tusk emphasized the importance of constitutional adherence during Poland’s Constitution Day celebrations on May 3. He also pointed out that any constitutional amendments would require a two-thirds majority in the lower house and an absolute majority in the Senate. However, the parliament is currently controlled by Tusk’s liberal coalition, and the opposition PiS party lacks the necessary votes to pass any proposed changes. This political divide could significantly complicate the amendment process.

Poland Nears SAFE Program Credit Agreement

Separately, Poland is finalizing preparations to sign a credit agreement under the European SAFE program. Government representative for SAFE, Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka, announced that the process is in its final stretch, with the signing expected within “several dozen hours.” The funding is aimed at bolstering the country’s defense capabilities.

The push for a new constitution in Poland has the potential to reshape the country’s political landscape, as it reignites debates over respect for existing legal frameworks and possible shifts in governance. Prime Minister Tusk’s reaction underscores deep divisions between the government and the opposition, which may hinder progress on revising the nation’s fundamental law. Meanwhile, the upcoming SAFE credit agreement marks a critical step in strengthening Poland’s defense posture, particularly relevant given current regional security challenges.

As Poland navigates these significant political changes, the nation is also on the brink of finalizing a crucial credit agreement under the EU SAFE program. This funding, aimed at enhancing defense capabilities, highlights the government's efforts to strengthen national security amidst ongoing constitutional debates.
