Car sales through Diia: what to do with old license plates

Popularity of the Diia platform in Ukraine

According to ХВИЛЯ: Since the beginning of 2023, the sale of vehicles through the Diia platform has become popular in Ukraine, especially in Kyiv. An important question that arises for owners is the fate of old license plates. According to the new rules, they do not need to be submitted for storage to the MVS service center. The owner has the option to decide what to do with the old plates: transfer them to the new owner or destroy them on their own.

According to data, since the beginning of the year, nearly 185 thousand vehicles have been sold through Diia, of which 14% are cars with new license plates of the DI series. Of this number, about 25 thousand cars received new license plates, the majority of which are passenger cars that received over 19 thousand sets. Electric vehicles also received over 1300 new numbers, motorcycles over 4200, and mopeds 360 sets.

The process of assigning a number for the buyer looks as follows:

• during the application submission, you need to choose between an old number or reserve a new number with the DI series;
• the buyer can choose a paid or free combination of the new number;
• decide on the format of the registration certificate - electronic or plastic form;
• specify the Ukrposhta branch for receiving numbers and documents;
• confirm the correctness of the data and pay for the service.

Documents and numbers are delivered by Ukrposhta within 10 days, making the process convenient for new vehicle owners.

The introduction of new vehicle registration rules through the Diia platform simplifies the procedure for vehicle owners and stimulates the market, as a significant portion of transactions occur online. This also reduces the burden on MVS service centers, which can positively impact the overall level of service. Given the increasing number of sales, further development of electronic services in the transport sector and growing interest in new license plates of the DI series can be expected.
