In 2024, Xiaomi released a new fitness bracelet Band 9, which replaces last year's Band 8. Should you upgrade to the new model or are the improvements insignificant? Let's find out!

Design and Features

The first thing to mention is the updated design of the Band 9. The casing frame is metal and matte, rather than glossy plastic like the Band 8. This model raises Xiaomi's fitness bracelets to a new level. The case itself has become slightly more compact and lighter, measuring 46.5×21.5×11 mm, with a weight of about 16 g for the metal version. The screen itself hasn’t changed formally – it’s still the same 1.62" AMOLED with a resolution of 192×490 px. However, it boasts an increase in peak brightness from 500 to 1200 nits. The strap remains the same as the predecessor's, so the old collection will fit the new gadget.

Sensors and Metrics

Xiaomi has significantly revamped the internals of the Band 9 compared to the Band 8:

  1. The updated heart rate and light sensors in the style of Mi Band 7 are visible on the back. A heart rate measurement feature has been added.
  2. In tests, the Band 9 shows different data for pulse, sleep, and physical activity compared to Band 8. When compared with professional equipment, the new model is more accurate.

Of course, the margin of error in the Band 9's data is greater than that of certified sports devices. However, for amateur workouts, this should be sufficient.

Battery Life – the Main Advantage of the New Model

The most important change is battery life:

  1. The battery has increased by 22.5% to 222 mAh. The declared working time is up to 21 days.
  2. The new Bluetooth 5.4 provides a faster connection to your smartphone and consumes less battery.

In real tests with constant heart rate monitoring, notifications, and an hourly workout, the Band 9 loses about 8-9% of its charge per day. That means 10–12 days of battery life compared to a week for the Band 8 – very impressive!

Interface and Features

However, in terms of interface and functionality, the Band 9 is almost indistinguishable from the Band 8:

  1. Menu icons and widgets have been slightly updated; everything else remains the same;
  2. The set of functions and sports modes is identical to the Band 8 – nothing new.

The vibration feature was disappointing – there are still no settings, and the standard notifications can be long and irritating.

Verdict

Overall, the Xiaomi Band 9 can be considered a successful update of the not-so-successful 8th generation:

  1. The main improvements are battery life up to 12 days, faster and more economical Bluetooth 5.4, and a pleasant metallic frame design.
  2. The device's screen has significantly improved, especially the brightness of 1200 nits at peak.
  3. The serious accuracy problems of the Band 8 have been partially addressed, and compatibility with the straps allows for a 'painless' transition to the new version.

The Xiaomi Band 9 is a solid fitness bracelet that will appeal to gadget lovers who value long battery life. It will surely find its buyers. However, it lacks obvious breakthroughs or unique features – rather, it is just a solid evolution of the line. Do you want the longest-lasting bracelet in a renewed case with a more advanced screen? Then the Xiaomi Band 9 could be an excellent choice.
