Xi Urges Iran Ceasefire as Putin Arrives in Beijing for Talks
Vladimir Putin’s Visit to China
According to ХВИЛЯ: Russian President Vladimir Putin has landed in Beijing for discussions with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. This marks Putin’s 25th trip to China since coming to power and comes just one week after U.S. President Donald Trump was hosted in the same city.
The war in Iran dominated the agenda, with Xi calling for an immediate and complete ceasefire and warning against any resumption of hostilities. He emphasized that
“a full end to the war cannot be delayed, a return to fighting is even less acceptable, and continued negotiations are especially critical”
- Xi Jinping.
Russia-China Cooperation
Both sides agreed to extend the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness, Friendship, and Cooperation and are expected to sign around 40 bilateral documents. A 21-gun salute rang out in Tiananmen Square to honor the visit, with an informal tea session also scheduled. Moscow’s top priority in Beijing remains the 'Power of Siberia 2' gas pipeline.
China now supplies over one-third of Russia’s imports and buys more than a quarter of its exports. However, Russia accounts for just about 4% of China’s total foreign trade. Commenting on the dynamic, Alexander Gabuev noted that
“China holds enormous leverage and can dictate exactly what it wants from the menu of bilateral cooperation.”
Vasily Kashin observed that the Gulf War has introduced a new factor shaping China’s strategic calculations and the signals it sends to partners. Henrietta Levine stressed that Putin would be unable to sustain the war in Ukraine without the systemic support China provides to Russia’s military machine. She also predicted that in Beijing, Putin would seek greater material backing for Russian forces and additional assistance from Chinese financial institutions to bypass U.S. and European sanctions.
Ultimately, Putin’s visit to China underscores the growing importance of ties between the two nations amid current geopolitical challenges. With rising regional tensions and the need for mutual support, this partnership could significantly shape global political developments, particularly regarding conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine. For Russia, cooperation with China has become critically important as it faces international isolation and sanctions.
