Putin Trapped in His Own 'Anchorage Deal' Fantasy as Russian Offensive Stalls
Putin’s Address at the St. Petersburg Economic Forum
According to ХВИЛЯ: Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Vladimir Putin claimed Russia’s economy is thriving while the West faces decline. However, Tatiana Stanovaya, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center, argues that the situation on the battlefield tells a different story. According to her, the Russian offensive has effectively ground to a halt, even as Ukraine intensifies its strikes deep inside Russian territory.
Putin asserted that Russia, in terms of purchasing power parity, has overtaken all of Europe and that its control over the Donetsk region has grown from 75% to 85%. He also maintains that Russian forces are advancing along the entire front and retain the capacity for non-nuclear escalation. Yet Stanovaya reports that Ukrainian forces are conducting medium-range strikes on Russian soil, using drones to target the land corridor to Crimea-causing fuel shortages on the peninsula. The Ukrainian army is also hitting logistics hubs in Donbas and infrastructure in the Krasnodar region. Meanwhile, Russia’s short-range air defense systems are running low on ammunition.
Negotiations and the Kremlin’s Stance
Putin insists on a deal supposedly reached with Donald Trump in Anchorage, which calls for the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbas. At the same time, he has no intention of meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy. European participation in talks is only possible if Kyiv agrees to pull back its forces.
“Putin is increasingly tangled in the ‘Anchorage trap.’ The Kremlin is making it ever clearer that it will accept nothing less than a phantom agreement, which becomes less realistic by the day.”
Tatiana Stanovaya, Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center
She further emphasizes that “the decision-making process revolves around a single individual with an inflexible view of how the world works.”
Putin’s remarks at the forum reflect the Kremlin’s official line, aimed at projecting an image of stability and economic success despite the realities of the war in Ukraine. However, expert analysis from figures like Tatiana Stanovaya points to major setbacks on the front lines and in the economy, which could shape Russia’s future choices in the conflict.
As the situation in Ukraine continues to evolve, it becomes increasingly important to consider the implications of Putin's health and his recent public appearances. Reports suggest that the Russian leader's erratic remarks at the St. Petersburg Economic Forum may reflect deeper issues affecting his leadership and decision-making capabilities, further complicating Russia's military strategy.
