Ryan Johnson and Steve Yedlin Launch Chromagraph Camera App for iPhone Offering RAW Photos with Cinematic Editing

Introducing the Chromagraph Camera App

According to НВ — Техно: Director Ryan Johnson and cinematographer Steve Yedlin have unveiled Chromagraph Camera, a new iPhone app that enables users to capture photos in RAW format. Released on the App Store on October 28 for $12.99, the app features a proprietary image processing system originally developed for Johnson’s films. Currently, Chromagraph Camera supports still photography only, with video capabilities expected to be added later.

Unlike Apple’s default image pipeline, Chromagraph Camera employs its own algorithms, giving users detailed control over:

• color rendition
• tone gradients
• texture
• grain
• light halos

This manual adjustment of color, tone, and texture makes the app ideal for photographers aiming to achieve a cinematic look on their iPhones. Ryan Johnson explained that his goal was to create an intuitive camera app that delivers images with the distinctive color grading characteristic of cinema.

Collaboration and Future Plans

Colorist Eric Cameron also contributed to the project. Regarding an Android version, the team has no immediate plans to develop one, citing the wide variety of camera hardware across Android devices. Johnson noted, “Apple devices have more standardized camera specs, whereas Android phones vary greatly. Our small team can’t tailor the processing for every model.”

Ryan Johnson, known for directing films such as 'Knives Out' and 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi,' has worked closely with Steve Yedlin, who has been his director of photography on all feature films since 2005’s 'Brick.' The release of Chromagraph Camera marks a significant advancement in mobile photography tools, bringing professional-grade image processing to everyday smartphone users.

This app launch has the potential to reshape mobile photography by offering powerful editing features on a familiar platform. Thanks to its unique processing algorithms, Chromagraph Camera is poised to attract photographers looking to elevate the quality of their smartphone images. With video recording expected to be added in the future, the app’s functionality and user base could grow even further.
