UN Security Council Calls Emergency Session After Russian Strikes on Kyiv
Emergency UN Security Council Meeting
According to Главком: An emergency session of the UN Security Council is scheduled for May 28 in response to the escalation of Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities. The Ukrainian delegation reached out to China's permanent representative Fu Cong, given that China currently holds the presidency of the UN Security Council. The meeting will begin at 3:00 PM Eastern Time (10:00 PM Kyiv time). This decision follows a massive combined assault on Kyiv that occurred overnight on May 24.
Situation in Kyiv
According to reports, over 50 locations in Kyiv have been destroyed or damaged as a result of these strikes. Among the affected sites are:
- the Lukyanivka market
- the residential complexes 'Zeleny Ostrov-1' and 'Zeleny Ostrov-2', located near the U.S. Embassy
- the building of the Azerbaijani Embassy
- the National Art Museum
- the Chernobyl Museum
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova confirmed that 'strikes on Kyiv have been carried out and will continue to be carried out.'
Notably, on May 25, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov informed U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a phone call that systematic strikes on targets in the capital had begun. Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Refat Chubarov also expressed the expectation of intensified mutual missile and drone strikes. In the Kyiv region, impacts from experimental ballistic missiles known as 'Oreshnik' were recorded in Bila Tserkva.
In response to these events, nearly 50 UN member states issued a joint statement strongly condemning the shelling. Despite the escalating situation, EU member embassies have refused to evacuate, a move characterized as a 'masterpiece of hypocrisy.' These developments highlight the growing tension in the region and the urgent need for an international response to the aggression.
The intensifying conflict between Russia and Ukraine, particularly the attacks on civilian infrastructure, has sparked deep concern within the international community. The convening of the emergency UN Security Council meeting underscores that the situation in Ukraine remains a top priority for global leaders as they seek ways to counter aggression and protect civilians. The events in Kyiv, along with the joint statements from UN member states, demonstrate that the international community will not stand idly by.
In light of the recent attacks, the situation on the ground remains dire, with significant destruction reported across Kyiv.
