Ринок ритуальних послуг в Росії стрімко зростає: українська розвідка виявила основні фактори цього зростання.

Russia’s Funeral Industry Sees Sharp Growth

According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SZRU) has reported a significant expansion in Russia’s funeral services market amid sanctions and economic recession. In the early months of 2026, the monetary value of this sector rose by 16%, while the number of burial orders increased by 6.9%. Additionally, the first quarter of 2026 saw a 37.5% jump in the number of new companies entering this industry. This trend highlights the resilience of a sector often linked to broader societal and economic pressures.

According to 2025 statistics, Russia’s official funeral services market reached 128.3 billion rubles, an 18% rise from the previous year. Notably, when accounting for the shadow economy, the true market size exceeds 250 billion rubles. This indicates that demand for funeral services remains steady despite economic hardships.

Tax Reforms and Their Impact

Starting in 2026, Russia lowered the revenue threshold for value-added tax (VAT) exemption from 60 million to 20 million rubles. This policy shift has prompted funeral service providers to split into smaller entities. As a result, the price of a standard coffin has gone up by 10%. The SZRU notes,

“This is a direct blow to small businesses, particularly funeral agency owners.”

Official Moscow, however, has avoided commenting on why the funeral industry remains one of the most dynamic sectors in the domestic economy. According to the SZRU,

“Demand for funeral services in Russia is the only indicator that doesn’t require government subsidies.”

For context, the annual revenue of Russia’s largest gold producer, Polyus, only slightly exceeds the 250 billion ruble mark, underscoring the funeral market’s significance in the current economic landscape.

In summary, Russia’s funeral services market is growing despite adverse economic conditions driven by external factors.

The expansion of Russia’s funeral services market may reflect steady demand for these services even amid economic instability. This phenomenon could be linked to demographic shifts, social factors, and cultural traditions. Since funeral services remain a vital aspect of public life, their development may serve as an indicator of the country’s overall economic health and consumer sentiment.

The ongoing growth of Russia's funeral services market stands in stark contrast to the broader economic challenges the country faces. As highlighted in our recent analysis of Russia’s economic slowdown, rising debt and business closures paint a grim picture for many sectors. Understanding the dynamic nature of the funeral industry may provide insights into the resilience of specific markets amid widespread financial distress.
