New Memorial Alley in Kyiv Draws Sharp Criticism from Families of Fallen Heroes

Outrage Among Relatives of Deceased Soldiers

According to Главком: In Kyiv's Desnyanskyi district, families of fallen Ukrainian soldiers are voicing strong discontent over a newly built Memorial Alley. Instead of the promised tribute to the heroes, the site features concrete structures with low-quality black-and-white photos and errors in personal details-some already showing signs of decay. Municipal workers also destroyed existing flower beds during construction.

Lyudmyla Korol, a relative of a fallen Ukrainian defender, spoke on the Kyiv24 TV channel. She pointed out that the display boards contain mistakes in military ranks and last names. Some soldiers were incorrectly labeled as "private," which has deeply upset their families. Korol emphasized that the concrete installations look inappropriate:

The Memorial Alley's Appearance

She also described the Alley's appearance as "absolutely awful." The installed plaques only list names, surnames, and a generic label like "commander" without specifying the unit. There is no biographical information about the defenders-such as where and how they died, their age, or their civilian professions. "There are mistakes in the surnames and ranks... It looks terrible. These aren't just my words-this is what the families who saw it said. The concrete is already crumbling. It hasn't been treated with anything," Korol added.

Relatives of the fallen service members express deep concern that the originally promised large, beautiful concrete murals with color photographs and detailed information panels for each soldier were never delivered. The current structures raise more questions than gratitude.

This situation has sparked widespread public outcry, as honoring fallen soldiers is a vital part of national identity. The failure to deliver on promises for a proper memorial highlights potential issues in project planning and execution, as well as the need for better communication between authorities and the community to improve the quality of such initiatives.
