Russian Strikes on Odesa Region Energy Grid Leave Tens of Thousands Without Power
Energy Infrastructure Targeted
According to Главком: Russian forces launched a major attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure overnight on March 26, targeting four DTEK energy facilities in the Odesa region. The assault caused significant damage and widespread power outages. While utility crews managed to restore electricity to 31,500 households in the region, a further 33,400 families remained without power by the morning of March 26. These attacks are part of a sustained Russian campaign to degrade Ukraine's civilian energy grid, which has been ongoing since the winter of 2022.
In a separate attack during the same night, Russian forces also struck the Odesa region with attack drones, damaging port, energy, and industrial infrastructure. Fires broke out at the impact sites and were extinguished by rescue services. One person was wounded as a result of these strikes.
Shelling of Settlements
Over the course of the day, Russian troops shelled 42 settlements in the Sumy region a total of 50 times. Communities in the Sumy, Shostka, Konotop, and Okhtyrka districts came under fire. Additionally, on the morning of March 26, Russian Federation forces struck Kryvyi Rih in the Dnipropetrovsk region, damaging an infrastructure facility.
These coordinated attacks highlight Russia's continued strategy of targeting both military and civilian infrastructure to destabilize daily life across Ukraine. Damage to the energy grid risks causing prolonged blackouts, which severely impact civilians, especially during colder months. Such actions also influence the international response and the level of support Ukraine receives from its Western partners.
The ongoing assault on Ukraine's energy infrastructure has led to widespread outages, affecting numerous regions. This recent escalation mirrors similar incidents where multiple areas experienced significant blackouts due to Russian strikes.
