Russian Strike Hits Kyiv's Roshen Candy Factory, Killing Worker and Injuring Others
Strike Targets Roshen Confectionery Plant
According to Главком: In an overnight assault on Kyiv on January 24, Russian forces struck the Roshen candy factory located in the Holosiivskyi district. The attack involved two direct hits on the same location, resulting in the death of one female employee and leaving two others with serious injuries. This incident has provoked widespread outrage among the public and political figures. The targeting of a civilian food production facility underscores the brutal nature of the ongoing war.
Roshen is one of Ukraine's largest confectionery companies and has a significant international presence. In 2025, it ranks 27th in the global ranking of candy producers. The company's annual output is approximately 300,000 tons, with a product range of about 320 different items. Within Ukraine, Roshen operates around 70 branded stores, the first of which opened in Kyiv in 2009.
Aftermath of the Attack
Commenting on the attack's consequences, former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko stated:
“This is not a military base or a strategic object. This is a civilian factory. A workplace. A person who should not have died.” - Petro Poroshenko
His words highlight the humanitarian dimension of the situation, emphasizing that the attack affected ordinary people simply doing their jobs.
The Roshen corporate structure in Ukraine includes:
- The Kyiv Confectionery Factory
- The Kremenchuk Factory
- Two factories in Vinnytsia
- The Vinnytsia Dairy Plant
- A biscuit production complex in Boryspil
Internationally, the company also operates factories in Klaipėda, Lithuania, and the Bonbonetti Choco factory in Hungary. The ultimate beneficial owner of PrJSC 'Kyiv Confectionery Factory Roshen' is Oleksiy Poroshenko.
This strike on a civilian facility illustrates the severe tensions in Ukraine and the direct impact of military actions on the population. The incident is part of the protracted conflict between Ukraine and Russia, which continues to have grave humanitarian consequences. By targeting Roshen, a major economic entity, the attack not only claimed a life but also threatens the economic stability of the region, with potential long-term repercussions for the local community and the national economy.
