Drone Attacks on Odesa in 2024

According to Главком: In a series of assaults in February and March 2024, Russian forces launched three separate drone attacks on the Ukrainian port city of Odesa. Serhiy Lysak, head of the Odesa regional military administration, reported significant damage to residential buildings and infrastructure, as well as civilian casualties. These attacks are part of a broader pattern of strikes on Ukrainian cities far from the front lines.

Attack Details

  • On March 19, a Russian drone strike targeted residential areas of Odesa. The attack resulted in direct hits on:

    • Two multi-story apartment buildings;
    • A residential building in the historic city center;
    • Several structures in a private housing sector.

    Fires broke out following the impacts, injuring three people, two of whom required hospitalization at a city medical facility.

  • Earlier, on February 21, Russian forces also attacked Odesa, damaging:

    • Infrastructure facilities;
    • Four residential buildings in different city districts;
    • An educational institution.

    Prior to that, on February 17, another drone assault damaged critical infrastructure and civilian structures. The strike ignited a fire on the upper floors of an apartment building in one district, while in another, a shop and a service station were hit. Two people were reported injured in this earlier attack.

These incidents underscore the persistent threat to civilian areas in Odesa and highlight the urgent need for enhanced security measures. The city, a vital Black Sea port and UNESCO-listed cultural center, has been a frequent target since the start of the full-scale invasion.

The three drone attacks in rapid succession have left the city in a state of heightened tension. The extensive damage to homes and essential services has had severe consequences for local residents, who require greater protection. This situation emphasizes the critical responsibility of local and national authorities to implement measures that safeguard civilians and facilitate the repair of damaged infrastructure.

The recent drone strikes on Odesa highlight a worrying trend of escalating attacks on civilian infrastructure. This follows earlier incidents that not only damaged residential buildings but also impacted essential services like schools and power grids.
