According to НВ — Техно: Researchers have uncovered how so-called “zombie cells” drive persistent inflammation in older adults. An international team from the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, Mayo Clinic, and other institutions discovered a critical link between mitochondria, cellular metabolism, and age-related chronic inflammation.
The study revealed that aging leads to the buildup of senescent cells-cells that no longer divide but remain metabolically active. These cells release molecules that trigger ongoing inflammation. Their mitochondria produce excessive acetyl-CoA, causing changes in histone proteins that open up DNA regions controlling inflammation-related genes.
