Massive Drone Barrage on Ukraine Kills Child, Leaves Thousands Without Power
Ukraine Hit by Coordinated Drone Assault
According to ДСНС: Russia launched a large-scale drone attack against Ukraine, targeting the city of Odesa and energy infrastructure across multiple regions. The assault resulted in civilian casualties, injuries, and widespread power outages. Overnight strikes in Odesa damaged residential buildings, a kindergarten, and a district power substation, plunging thousands of households into darkness. Repair crews have been working through the night to restore electricity.
Attack Details and Mounting Casualties
The attack has claimed three lives, including a two-year-old child. Sixteen people were wounded, with eleven requiring hospitalization; among them are a pregnant woman and two children, the youngest of whom is less than a year old. Two additional individuals were injured in the Kharkiv region.
During the assault, Russian forces fired more than 140 attack drones, approximately 80 of which were Shahed-type 'kamikaze' drones. Strikes also hit energy infrastructure in the Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions. This comes amid a severe escalation over the past week, which has seen over 2,800 attack drones, nearly 1,350 guided aerial bombs, and more than 40 missiles of various types launched against Ukraine. These relentless attacks on civilian infrastructure represent a deliberate strategy to cripple the country's vital systems.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy: 'Last night, Russia attacked Odesa with strike drones. Residential buildings and a kindergarten were damaged, along with a district power substation. Thousands of families were left without electricity. Repair crews have been working since the night to restore power. As of now, we unfortunately know that three people were killed in this attack, including a child who was only two years old. My sincere condolences to the families and loved ones. Sixteen people were injured. Eleven of them were hospitalized by our medics, including a pregnant woman and two children. The youngest is less than a year old. Two people were also injured in the Kharkiv region. There were strikes on energy facilities in the Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions. I thank our services who are helping on the ground.'
The President further stated: 'Overall, last night Russia launched over 140 attack drones against Ukraine, and about 80 of them were 'Shaheds.' In some regions, the strikes are ongoing. And this is only part of what our people endure every day.' This situation underscores the immense and continuous threat Ukraine faces. The ongoing war has increasingly targeted energy grids, aiming to break civilian resilience during the harsh winter months.
The attack on Odesa and other regions is part of Russia's ongoing aggressive actions against Ukraine, which have intensified significantly in the past week. The unrelenting strikes on civilian infrastructure, particularly energy facilities, indicate an intent to destroy critical systems that sustain the population. Restoring power and providing medical aid to the wounded remain top priorities for Ukrainian services. Consequently, drone attacks continue to pose a severe threat to civilian safety and national stability amid the ongoing conflict.
The ongoing conflict has led to a series of devastating attacks, including a recent incident in Odesa where a drone strike resulted in the loss of life and injuries to civilians.
