Russia modernizes 'Shaheds': how drones have changed to counter Ukrainian electronic warfare
Modernization of Shahed Strike Drones
According to ХВИЛЯ: Russian occupation forces are modernizing Shahed-type strike drones in an attempt to improve their capabilities against Ukrainian electronic warfare. In particular, experts note a significant strengthening of the drones' resilience to electronic warfare, which may affect their effectiveness in conflict.
One of the key changes is the transition from 4-element antennas to new 16-element ones, which, according to military expert Sergey Beskrestnov, greatly enhances the communication capabilities of the drones. Additionally, Chinese Mesh modems are being installed on Shahed drones, allowing them to communicate with each other over distances of up to 200 km. This solution provides greater autonomy in drone management and reduces dependence on traditional mobile communication networks.
Moreover, Russian forces are experimenting with the explosive warheads of the drones, increasing their weight to 100 kg. This may indicate an intention to enhance the combat effectiveness of the unmanned aerial vehicles, making them more dangerous for Ukrainian forces. Sergey Beskrestnov notes that, considering the new technologies, Russian forces are changing their approaches to drone management, moving away from mobile communication in favor of advanced Chinese Mesh networks.

Impact of Modernization on the Conflict
Thus, the modernization of Shahed drones is an important step in the competition between the parties to the conflict, indicating the adaptation of Russian troops to modern conditions of warfare.
The modernization of Shahed drones may significantly change the tactical situation on the front, as the improvement of their resistance to electronic warfare and enhancement of communication capabilities allows Russian forces to use these unmanned aerial vehicles more effectively. This may lead to new challenges for Ukrainian forces, which are currently actively countering the drone threat. In the context of the constant evolution of warfare technologies, it is important to monitor changes in the tactics of both sides, as they can significantly impact the course of the conflict.
