Putin’s Growing Demands: What Moscow Wants from NATO to End the War in Ukraine

According to Radiotrek — Світ: Russia insists that NATO reduce its military footprint in Europe to what it was in 1997, while also seeking to limit European countries’ involvement in negotiations aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine. The Kremlin is currently engaging in talks with Ukraine and the United States, deliberately excluding the European Union in an effort to weaken the cohesion among Europe’s partners supporting Ukraine and to secure security-related concessions.

These demands for NATO to scale back its forces were first presented in December 2021. The proposed reductions specifically target countries that joined the alliance after 1997. According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW),

“this could effectively mean a reduction of NATO’s military presence in nations that became members after 1997.”

Moscow’s Influence on Peace Negotiations

The Kremlin aims to restrict European nations’ participation in talks to resolve the war in Ukraine. Russian presidential advisor Yuri Ushakov has expressed Moscow’s surprise at the lack of a unified European stance on ending the conflict. The ongoing negotiations primarily involve Ukraine, Russia, and the United States, deliberately leaving out European representatives. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that

“the European Union is not part of the trilateral negotiation format.”

Russia’s ambitions extend beyond Ukraine’s security to reshaping the broader European security framework. These efforts indicate Moscow’s desire to gain greater control over security matters, potentially altering the political balance across the region. Such moves have raised alarm among Western nations striving to maintain solidarity in their support for Ukraine.

Russia’s demands reflect its continued attempts to shift the geopolitical landscape in Europe and undermine NATO’s influence on the continent. Against the backdrop of escalating tensions between Russia and the West, it is critical for NATO members to remain united and steadfast in backing Ukraine’s fight to preserve its sovereignty. The outcome of these negotiations will have far-reaching consequences for security across both Ukraine and Europe as a whole.
