Russian Night Strike Hits Ukraine: Blackouts in Kyiv and Four Regions
Strike on Ukraine's Energy Infrastructure
According to Главком: On the night of July 2, the Russian Federation launched an attack on Ukrainian territory, leaving some consumers without electricity. Shelling of energy facilities caused temporary outages in the city of Kyiv, as well as in the Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv regions. The most severe situation unfolded in Sumy Oblast, where damage to energy sites from hostilities and enemy shelling left the highest number of customers powerless.
In Donetsk region, three workers were injured during maintenance at an energy facility when shelling struck. They were taken to a hospital.
“The situation in Sumy Oblast remains the most critical. Here, due to damage to energy infrastructure from hostilities and enemy shelling, the largest number of consumers have been disconnected. Power engineers are working around the clock to restore electricity to Ukrainian homes as quickly as possible,” stated the Ministry of Energy.
Power Supply Situation
Additionally, severe weather has left over 70 settlements without electricity in Lviv, Zakarpattia, Chernihiv, and Kyiv regions. However, as of July 2, no power outages are forecast across Ukraine. This stability is attributed to a temperature drop in neighboring countries and an increase in electricity imports.
Given the ongoing assaults on Ukraine's energy grid, the power supply situation remains challenging, especially in areas near active combat zones. Restoring electricity in blacked-out districts is a top priority for energy workers operating under extreme conditions. While storms in other regions also threaten grid stability, imports and shifting weather patterns have helped prevent nationwide outages on July 2.
As the situation continues to evolve, it is essential to stay informed about the ongoing challenges to the power supply across Ukraine.
