Russia Deploys New 'Geran-5' Jet-Powered Drones in Ukraine: Key Details on the Weapon
Russia's Evolving Military Arsenal in Ukraine
According to Главком: Russian forces have begun deploying a new, jet-powered variant of their 'Geran' (Geranium) attack drones, designated the 'Geran-5'. The weapon's mass use was confirmed in a series of attacks in April 2026, which targeted energy infrastructure in the Sumy region and the city of Odesa. This development marks a significant upgrade from previous propeller-driven models, as the new drone replaces a piston engine with a jet engine for greater performance. It is important to note that the 'Geran-5' is not an original Russian design but is instead a copy of the Iranian Karrar drone.
The 'Geran-5' can reach speeds of up to 600 km/h and carries a warhead containing approximately 90 kg of explosives. It has an advertised operational range of up to 1,000 km and has been found to contain components like Texas Instruments microchips and Raspberry Pi microcomputers. As Ukrainian journalist Andriy Tsaplyenko noted,
“Russia is now striking with the guided, jet-powered 'Geran-5' drone, which is three times faster than the Shahed models-in its design, it is closer to a miniature cruise missile.”
New Robotic Platforms Enter the Battlefield
Separately, Russian occupation forces have also started using a new heavy ground-based robotic platform called the 'Chelnok' (Shuttle). Its deployment was first documented in the Kharkiv region, marking the platform's confirmed combat debut since its initial presentation in April 2024. While the 'Chelnok' was initially presented as an engineering vehicle for demining, it is currently being utilized as a heavy logistics all-terrain vehicle.
In a related blow to Russian logistics, special forces from Ukraine's Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR) successfully disabled the railway ferry 'Slavyanin' during an operation on the night of April 5-6, 2026. This ferry was the last vessel of its kind still operational in the Kerch Strait, playing a crucial role in transporting military supplies for Russian forces to the occupied peninsula. Its loss significantly disrupts a key supply route for the Russian grouping there.
The introduction of new technologies like the 'Geran-5' drone and the 'Chelnok' robotic complex points to an evolution in Russian military tactics on the front lines. These jet-powered drones offer greater range and strike efficiency, which could impact the dynamics of the conflict. Meanwhile, the operation against the 'Slavyanin' ferry underscores the critical importance of interdicting enemy supply lines, a constant feature of modern warfare.
In addition to the deployment of the 'Geran-5' drones, Russian forces are also enhancing their capabilities on the ground. The introduction of the new heavy robotic platform, known as the 'Chelnok', signifies a shift in their operational tactics, as it is being utilized for logistics and engineering purposes. This development further complicates the battlefield dynamics in Ukraine.
