Russian Court Sentences Ukrainian POWs as New Firefighting Unit is Formed for Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant

Ukrainian Prisoners of War Sentenced

According to Главком: A Russian military court in Rostov-on-Don has convicted four Ukrainian prisoners of war. The servicemen, from the Azov and Aidar battalions, received the following prison sentences:

• Artem Kushakov (Azov battalion) - 19 years in a strict-regime penal colony;
• Taras Koshman (Azov battalion) - 18 years in a strict-regime penal colony;
• Oleh Pavlenko (Azov battalion) - 6 years in a general-regime penal colony;
• Mykola Salo (Aidar battalion) - 5.5 years in a general-regime penal colony.

New Emergency Unit Established

Separately, Russian authorities announced the creation of a new special unit within the Federal Fire Service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations (MChS) for the occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. This unit is planned to have a staff of 211 people, with its formation scheduled for completion between 2027 and 2028. The decision is linked to a severe personnel shortage in the occupied regions, with Zaporizhzhia Oblast lacking approximately 20% of MChS staff and Kherson Oblast facing a deficit exceeding 51%.

These developments occur against the backdrop of Russia's ongoing efforts to consolidate its control over occupied Ukrainian territories. The sentencing of the Ukrainian POWs highlights the continuation of Russia's repressive judicial measures, while the formation of the new emergency unit represents an attempt to bolster its administrative and security presence.
