Ukrainian Forces Eliminate 29 Russian Assault Troops in Underground Pipeline Attack
Situation in Sumy Region
According to Главком: Ukrainian military units have completely destroyed a group of 29 Russian assault troops who attempted to infiltrate Ukrainian positions via an underground gas pipeline in the Sumy region. This is not the first instance of Russian forces using such covert routes for attacks. The ongoing conflict has seen both sides adapt their tactics to the challenging terrain along the northern border.
According to reports from Ukraine's 71st Separate Airmobile Brigade of the Air Assault Forces, which is operating on the North-Slobozhanskyi axis in Sumy Oblast, the Russian command sent the assault group through the pipeline to attack Ukrainian rear positions. The operation ended with the group being decimated by Ukrainian artillery and drone fire. This brigade is part of the 8th Corps of the Air Assault Forces.
Attempts to Use Underground Routes
The occupiers utilized the gas pipeline as a hidden path for their assault. After emerging from the pipe, the 29 invaders split into three groups, but all were subsequently eliminated. As noted by the brigade, 'This is not the first such attempt on this axis – the enemy has used this same route before, despite high losses and obvious risks.'
This incident indicates that Russian troops continue to seek alternative methods for conducting combat operations. Earlier in 2024, Russian forces used sewage pipes for attempted raids behind Ukrainian lines during operations in Avdiivka. In 2025, they attempted a breakthrough to Sudzha via a gas pipeline, and in September 2025, Ukrainian forces withdrew from the town of Sudzha in Kursk Oblast.
- On April 13, 2026, Russian terrorists attacked a civilian vehicle in the Hlukhiv community, resulting in the death of the driver.
- On April 14, 2026, an ambulance in the Hlukhiv community came under attack from an enemy drone.
The frontline situation remains tense, with Ukrainian forces demonstrating readiness to repel enemy attacks. The use of underground routes highlights an adaptation in Russian military tactics, which could complicate the defense of Ukrainian positions. These events underscore the necessity for constant monitoring and rapid response by Ukrainian troops to threats from the occupiers.
The recent elimination of Russian troops highlights the ongoing tactical adjustments made by both sides in the conflict. In a similar vein, the 80th Brigade successfully thwarted another Russian assault in the Sumy region, underscoring the persistent challenges faced by invading forces. These incidents reveal the continuous evolution of combat strategies as the situation unfolds in eastern Ukraine.
