Kremlin Plans Fresh Offensive in Northern Ukraine via Belarus, Kyiv Warns
Threat Axes for Ukraine
According to Главком: Moscow is exploring Belarus and the Bryansk region as launchpads for new attacks against Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed after a high-level military meeting on May 20. In response, Ukraine is reinforcing its northern defensive line and taking preventive action. The assessment underscores a persistent danger that has loomed over Ukraine since the full-scale invasion began.
During the meeting of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief's Staff, Zelensky stated that officials discussed the Belarus–Bryansk corridor, from which Russian forces could execute assault scenarios targeting Ukraine's northern territories-particularly the Chernihiv–Kyiv axis. The president issued directives to the military command to bolster defenses in that area.
'Today we held a Staff meeting. Together with the military, intelligence agencies, the SBU, and the Foreign Ministry, we thoroughly examined what is unfolding along the Belarus–Bryansk direction. It is from there that the Russians are considering scenarios for additional strikes against Ukraine-aimed at our northern regions, our Chernihiv–Kyiv axis,' Volodymyr Zelensky stated.
Zelensky also urged Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs to intensify diplomatic efforts regarding Belarus. 'I expect the MFA of Ukraine to be as active as possible in diplomatic work concerning Belarus: we need to increase pressure and strengthen coordination with our partners,' the president said. He emphasized that the threat from Belarus remains a chronic challenge for Ukraine: 'Frankly, we are tired of this constant menace-the possibility that at some point the Russians will drag Belarus into expanding the war.'
Defensive Measures and Border Situation
Additionally, Ukraine's intelligence agencies received classified assignments to address potential threats. On May 18, the Belarusian Armed Forces launched exercises to deploy Russian tactical nuclear weapons in field conditions, conducted in close cooperation with Russia's military leadership. Ukraine is reinforcing its defensive and fortification capabilities along the border with Belarus, spanning from the Volyn region to Chernihiv.
As a result, the situation along the northern front remains tense, and Ukrainian authorities are taking all necessary steps to safeguard the country.
The strengthening of defensive measures in the north highlights the seriousness of the threat posed by Russian military operations launched from Belarusian territory. Ukraine's diplomatic push also underscores the critical need for international coordination to counter aggression. The situation remains fluid, and the next moves by both Ukraine and its neighbors could significantly shape the conflict's trajectory.
As Ukraine prepares for potential threats from the north, the situation in Belarus remains a focal point of concern. Recent developments, such as military-related forest closures near the border, indicate heightened military activity that could further complicate Ukraine's defense strategies. This underscores the need for continued vigilance and diplomatic efforts in the region.
