Russian Attack Levels $40 Million Bioenergy Plant in Kyiv Region

Russians destroyed bioenergy station
В Київській області знищено біоенергетичний завод вартістю 40 мільйонів доларів внаслідок російської агресії.

Overnight Strike on May 29

According to Главком: A bioenergy power station in Ivankiv, Kyiv Oblast, was partially destroyed during a Russian attack on the night of May 29. Oleksiy Butenko, founder of the company BioGasEnergo, reported the damage and noted that approximately $40 million had been invested in the facility. Commissioned in 2016 with a capacity of 19 MW, the plant ranks among the largest biomass-fired power stations in Eastern Europe. Beyond electricity generation, it has created over 400 jobs and holds a partnership with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

The station also benefits from a green tariff of 12.39 euro cents per kWh, paid in hryvnia equivalent. BioGasEnergo plans to restore the plant once the full extent of the destruction is assessed. The air raid alert on the night of May 29 lasted 40 minutes and was issued around 3:00 AM. UN Secretary-General António Guterres had previously condemned Russian attacks on May 23 and 24, highlighting the severity of the ongoing situation.

Impact on Energy Security

The incident at the Ivankiv bioenergy facility underscores the mounting threats to Ukraine’s infrastructure amid the war. The destruction of such assets not only causes economic losses but also jeopardizes regional energy security, as bioenergy plays an increasingly vital role in the country’s energy mix. Restoring the power station will require substantial effort, and continued attacks could further delay the recovery process.

The ongoing conflict continues to threaten Ukraine's energy infrastructure, as evidenced by recent attacks. For instance, Russian forces targeted energy workers in Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions, further complicating the situation surrounding energy security. This escalation highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive assessment of the impacts on various facilities across the country.
