Disinformation Campaign Targets Western Weapons Aid

According to Главком: Russian propaganda outlets have launched a new disinformation campaign falsely claiming Ukraine is selling Western-supplied weapons on the black market. According to Ukraine's Center for Countering Disinformation, pro-Russian sources are spreading a fabricated story alleging that over 70% of the weapons used by Mexico's Jalisco New Generation Cartel are Western arms originally sent to Ukraine. This narrative is a persistent Kremlin effort to undermine international support. As purported evidence, the campaign uses a video bearing the logo of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), but no such video or related claims exist on the institute's official channels.

This false claim is being amplified by bot networks on social media, particularly in comments under posts marking the anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The theme of mass weapons sales is part of a systematic Kremlin propaganda offensive that has been ongoing since 2022. In a related tactic, Russian disinformation actors are also circulating AI-generated videos in Ukrainian information spaces, falsely depicting Ukrainian soldiers complaining about shortages of food and equipment on the front lines.

Systematic Russian Disinformation Network Exposed

The Center for Countering Disinformation notes that such falsified reports, crafted in the style of reputable analytical institutions, are a hallmark of the Russian disinformation network known as Matryoshka. This network systematically produces fake materials under the brands of authoritative Western organizations. The goal of these information attacks is to discredit Ukraine, erode trust in military aid oversight mechanisms, and diminish public support for Kyiv among partner nations. These campaigns exploit existing political debates in the West about the cost and accountability of aid.

This disinformation campaign underscores the critical importance of media literacy and a skeptical approach to information, especially during wartime and under sustained information attacks.

Tracking and debunking such fake news is vital to maintaining trust in state institutions and the international community that supports Ukraine in its fight for independence.
