Russian Forces Halt Assaults on Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, Redirecting Efforts Toward Dobropillia After 'Vivaldi' Operation

Russian troops change strategy
Російські війська припинили атаки на Слов'янськ і Краматорськ, зосередившись на нових цілях у Добропіллі після операції «Вівальді».

Operation 'Vivaldi'

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: Following the completion of Operation 'Vivaldi,' Russian troops have temporarily ceased direct attacks on Sloviansk and Kramatorsk and abandoned plans to encircle Donetsk Oblast. Instead, their focus has shifted to the Dobropillia sector. This operation successfully reclaimed significant territory, inflicted heavy losses on enemy forces, and disrupted Russia’s strategic objectives.

Andriy Biletskyy, commander of the 'Center' military group, provided an update on Operation 'Vivaldi,' which aimed primarily to thwart Russian advances. The Russian military had intended a multi-pronged offensive to seize full control of Donetsk Oblast, including the 'West' group consisting of three Russian armies. Their plan involved advancing from a bridgehead on the Chornyi Zherebets River toward Sviatohirsk and Rubtsi, while attempting to encircle the Sloviansk-Kramatorsk urban area from the north via the Sviatohirsk salient and circumventing Lyman. A secondary thrust was planned through Dobropillia village and town toward Barvinkove.

Outcomes of the Operation

The Russian offensive began in 2025, with expectations to reach Barvinkove by 2026. However, the 144th Division of Russia’s 20th Army was decisively defeated and ceased to function as an organized combat unit. After this setback, Russian forces abandoned their encirclement attempts around Donetsk Oblast and temporarily halted frontal assaults on Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, though plans to resume these attacks remain. Currently, Dobropillia remains the sole area where Russian forces have maintained some progress.

Since the operation’s start, Ukrainian forces have liberated 277 square kilometers and cleared several hundred square kilometers of Russian troops. Russian casualties have exceeded 8,000 personnel, including killed and wounded. Additionally, 270 Russian soldiers have been captured, among them the battalion chief of staff and 13 reconnaissance platoon commanders. More than 20 Russian officers surrendered in total. During the final phase of the operation, two battalion commanders of the Russian Armed Forces were killed.

Ukrainian forces destroyed approximately 3,800 units of enemy equipment, including 1,800 artillery systems. Ukrainian losses have been seven times lower than those of Russian troops. Andriy Biletskyy highlighted:

'The Russians suffer mostly fatalities, whereas we have mostly wounded. We are capable of advancing and maintaining effectiveness.' - Andriy Biletskyy

He also emphasized that Russian military actions now resemble a dying struggle rather than coordinated, systematic operations.

Operation 'Vivaldi' marked a technological milestone as Ukrainian forces deployed ground robotic complexes behind enemy lines for the first time. These robots were used for mine clearance, assault support, and frontline logistics. In the Shandryholove direction, these systems cleared 30 kilometers of routes without any casualties among sappers.

This operation represents a critical turning point in the conflict, showcasing Ukrainian forces’ ability to counter Russian offensive strategies effectively. The destruction of the 144th Division and substantial Russian personnel and equipment losses indicate a significant decline in Russia’s combat capabilities. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s ongoing active operations may shift the balance of power in the region and influence the future course of military engagements in the country.

As the situation evolves, the impact of Ukraine's recent 'Vivaldi' offensive becomes increasingly significant, with over 176 square kilometers liberated and enemy losses reaching 42,000 in just one month. This context sheds light on the ongoing struggle in the region and the shifting dynamics of military operations.
