Russian Paralympic Achievements

According to Главком: Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyaryov has linked the success of Russian Paralympians to veterans of the war in Ukraine. The Russian team placed third in the medal count at the 2026 Paralympic Games, held in Italy. Degtyaryov noted that the Ministry of Sport, together with the Russian Paralympic Committee, is actively developing programs to involve participants of the 'special military operation' in adaptive sports. He emphasized that the Paralympic committee conducts systematic rehabilitation for veterans, including master classes and sports competitions.

Reaction During Medal Ceremony

At the Paralympic Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Russian athlete Anastasia Bagiyan won the sprint event. However, during the playing of the Russian national anthem, German athletes, including skier Linn Kazmaier and her guide Florian Baumann, turned away and did not remove their hats. They also declined to take a joint selfie with Bagiyan. In a group photo, Kazmaier and Baumann stood at a distance from Bagiyan and her guide Sergei Sinyakin.

Degtyaryov believes the Paralympians' successes serve as an example for veterans of the 'special operation,' demonstrating that even with health limitations, one can achieve results and continue to bring glory to Russia. He stated this is an important endeavor that helps children and veterans who require social adaptation.

This statement by the Russian Sports Minister reflects attempts by the Russian authorities to showcase the successes of its sports program amid international isolation and criticism over the war. The inclusion of veterans in sports initiatives may be an attempt to boost morale and social adaptation for those returning from combat. The reaction of the German athletes during the medal ceremony underscores the ongoing international tensions that continue to spill over into global sporting events, highlighting how politics and sport remain deeply intertwined.

While the achievements of Russian Paralympians are being celebrated, the recent refusal of German Paralympians to participate in a joint photo with their Russian counterpart during the medal ceremony highlights the ongoing tensions in international sports. This incident underscores the complexities surrounding national pride and the impact of geopolitical issues on athletic events.
