Biochemistry Institute Engulfed in Flames After Russian Strike on Kyiv

According to Главком: A massive Russian assault on Kyiv on July 2, 2024, triggered a fire at the O. V. Palladin Institute of Biochemistry, part of Ukraine’s National Academy of Sciences. All staff managed to evacuate safely, resulting in no casualties at the facility. The attack involved a combination of drones, ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as hypersonic Zircon missiles.

Strike Consequences

The bombardment damaged 28 locations across the capital. Preliminary reports indicate 11 people were killed and over 30 wounded. Among the injured are:

  • Six workers from an emergency medical substation in the Shevchenkivskyi district,
  • Three paramedics,
  • Three emergency medical technicians who also served as drivers.

Medical professionals describe the condition of the wounded as moderate.

At the Institute of Biochemistry, freezers containing scientific materials continue to operate. The Institute’s leadership stated:

“No one was hurt. What didn’t burn is now flooded. Afternoon mop-up will allow cleanup and drying to begin.”

This incident has alarmed the scientific community, as such attacks threaten not only human lives but also critical research.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed the situation in the city remains under control but urged residents to stay vigilant and follow safety protocols. The ongoing strikes on Kyiv continue to cause deep concern, and authorities promise to take all necessary steps to protect the population.

This event underscores the persistent danger that military hostilities pose to civilians and essential infrastructure in Ukraine. The loss of life and injuries, particularly among healthcare workers, highlight the severe consequences of war-affecting not just soldiers but ordinary citizens. Ensuring safety and support for the victims, as well as preserving scientific work that could be lost in such attacks, remains a critical priority.

The ongoing conflict has also led to significant damage in other areas, such as the recent attack on a hospital in Mariupol. This incident further illustrates the widespread impact of military actions on healthcare facilities across Ukraine.
