Ukraine Asked by Romania to Equip Naval Drones With Self-Destruct Capabilities
Romania's Defense Ministry Issues Official Request to Kyiv
According to Главком: Romania's Ministry of National Defense has formally requested that Ukraine configure its naval drones to self-destruct if communication is lost. This demand follows an incident near the port of Constanța, where a Ukrainian maritime drone exploded. Defense Minister Radu Ștefan Mîrcea emphasized that the self-destruct mechanism must activate automatically when an uncrewed vessel approaches Romania's territorial waters or coastline without control.
Bucharest has sent an official document to Kyiv listing technical specifications related to this proposal. The event that triggered the request occurred on June 5, when an explosion linked to a Ukrainian naval drone took place in the Constanța port area. Romania's Ministry of National Defense also noted that a drone that struck a residential building in Galați was identified as a Russian-made Shahed-136 (Geran-2) type.
Reactions and Implications
Earlier, on May 29, a Russian drone crashed into a multi-story apartment block in Galați. Romanian authorities stated they lacked sufficient time to intercept the Russian drone in both cases. Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu remarked that the downing of the Russian drone in Galați meets the criteria for invoking NATO Article 4.
"If you suddenly lose them in the Black Sea when they approach Romania's territorial waters within 12 nautical miles, the operator controlling that drone must program it for automatic self-destruction." - Radu Ștefan Mîrcea
This initiative underscores the importance of Ukraine-Romania cooperation on Black Sea security matters.
Romania's call for self-destruct systems on Ukrainian drones reflects growing regional safety concerns, especially given recent incidents involving Russian unmanned aerial vehicles. It also highlights the need for close collaboration among Black Sea littoral states to maintain stability and prevent potential threats. Given the ongoing military conflict, such measures could significantly impact defense and security interactions between the two countries.
The recent incidents involving Ukrainian drones have heightened concerns about regional security, prompting Ukraine to extend its support to Romania. In light of the recent drone strike on a residential building, this collaboration is crucial for addressing the threats posed by Russian unmanned aerial vehicles.
