Chernobyl sarcophagus lost protective functions after drone strike – IAEA

According to glavcom.ua: The new safe confinement over the Chernobyl nuclear power plant reactor has lost its protective function after damage caused by a Russian drone in February. This information was released by the International Atomic Energy Agency and conveyed by the 'Glavkom' portal.

According to the IAEA's expert assessment, the structure of the sarcophagus, built after the 1986 disaster, can no longer guarantee safety. The agency's head, Rafael Grossi, emphasized the need for urgent measures. Although some repair work has been carried out, comprehensive efforts are needed to restore full protection.

IAEA recommended continuing restoration work, including humidity control, updating the corrosion monitoring system, and modernizing the surveillance system.

The critical safety situation with the new confinement over the Chernobyl NPP requires immediate actions and comprehensive restoration of the structure to prevent the danger of further mishaps.
