Ring Smuggling Men Eligible for Military Service Dismantled

According to Главком: Ukraine's Security Service (SBU), in a joint operation with the National Police, the State Border Guard Service, and the Prosecutor's Office, has uncovered and halted a criminal scheme smuggling men of conscription age across the border into Romania. Four residents of Kamianets-Podilskyi have been detained and formally notified of suspicion under Part 3 of Article 332 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, which covers the illegal transportation of persons across the state border. This operation is part of a broader crackdown on attempts to evade mobilization during the ongoing war.

The organizers charged clients $13,000 USD for the illegal crossing service. The scheme involved transporting individuals to border areas of the Chernivtsi region and then guiding them on foot through forested terrain to cross into Romania at unofficial points. To facilitate the illegal border crossing, the organizers even provided clients with tools to breach border fortifications. They reportedly recruited customers through Telegram channels.

Detentions and Legal Consequences

A court has ordered all four suspects to be held in custody pending trial. The article under which they are charged carries a potential penalty of up to nine years of imprisonment. In a separate but related case in the Kyiv region, a married couple was detained on suspicion of organizing a different draft evasion scheme. This involved obtaining a fraudulent medical diagnosis and disability status, with a nurse from a regional tuberculosis dispensary and several doctors allegedly involved in falsifying the medical documents.

This operation underscores the determined efforts of Ukrainian law enforcement to combat illegal emigration and mobilization evasion, issues of critical importance during wartime.

The exposure of such schemes signals the state's heightened focus on border security and the protection of national interests. It is likely to lead to stricter controls at border crossings and increased penalties for related crimes in the future.

The recent crackdown by the Ukrainian Security Service highlights the extensive efforts to combat various forms of draft evasion. In a related incident, a couple was arrested for orchestrating a scheme that involved falsifying medical documents to obtain fraudulent disability statuses, enabling individuals to avoid military service. This situation further illustrates the lengths to which some will go to evade mobilization, as detailed in the recent report on the fake disability draft dodging scheme.
