Russian Military Intelligence Network Dismantled

According to ХВИЛЯ: In a joint operation, Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) and other law enforcement agencies have dismantled an agent-combat network operated by Russian military intelligence (GRU). The group was actively planning terrorist attacks and carrying out assassinations. During the arrest, an armed assassin who resisted was neutralized.

Network Composition and Planned Operations

The cell consisted of over ten individuals who were gathering intelligence on the deployment of Ukraine's Armed Forces in the Kramatorsk and Pokrovsk districts, as well as in the Kharkiv region. The agents planned to carry out a terrorist attack at a food establishment in Kramatorsk, using a drone to deliver explosives. Their list of potential targets included:

  • An advisor to the Minister of Defense
  • Volunteer Serhiy Sternenko
  • Russian national Ilya Bogdanov, who fights for Ukraine as part of the Russian Volunteer Corps

The group was led by a recruited court expert from Poltava. The designated assassin was a native of occupied Donetsk who received training at a Russian GRU base. He had orders to shoot his targets at point-blank range if other methods failed. The suspects are currently in custody without the possibility of bail and face life imprisonment with confiscation of property. This operation highlights the persistent threat of covert Russian operations within Ukraine, which extend beyond the front lines.

"An agent-combat network of the Russian Federation, which was spying on the Armed Forces of Ukraine and preparing terrorist attacks and contract killings, has been exposed," stated Ruslan Krachenko.

The SBU added that, as a result of the special operation, "an agent-combat group of Russian military intelligence has been neutralized and a killer who offered armed resistance during detention has been liquidated."

This successful operation demonstrates the ongoing efforts of Ukrainian security forces to counter Russian aggression and its manifestations inside the country. The exposure of a network planning terrorist acts underscores the serious threat to national security and confirms the critical importance of intelligence and counterintelligence work. The detention of such individuals significantly reduces the risks of terrorist acts and contract killings, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance.

The recent dismantling of a Russian military intelligence network underscores the ongoing threat posed by covert operations in Ukraine. This incident follows a similar case where the Ukrainian Security Service arrested a Russian agent in Dnipro who was plotting a phone-triggered bombing. Such operations reveal the persistent risks that Ukrainian authorities face in safeguarding national security.
