Lviv to See Heightened Security as SBU Launches Major Counterintelligence Operation

SBU conducts large-scale counterintelligence measures in Lviv: what to expect for residents
У Львові очікується посилення заходів безпеки в зв'язку з масштабною антитерористичною операцією СБУ.

Lviv Counterintelligence Operation

According to Главком: From March 5th to 9th, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) will conduct a major counterintelligence operation in Lviv. Personnel from the National Police and the National Guard will assist in implementing these measures. The primary goal is to identify, prevent, and neutralize threats from espionage and sabotage activities against the state, while also enhancing civilian security amidst Russia's ongoing armed aggression against Ukraine. This operation reflects the heightened security posture across the country as the war continues.

Law Enforcement Actions

Law enforcement activities will cover the entire city of Lviv. The measures will be carried out under the legal framework of martial law, which may result in temporary restrictions on pedestrian and vehicle movement on streets, document checks, and vehicle inspections. Individuals who arouse suspicion may be subject to additional screening. Furthermore, officers will inspect public areas and premises to search for prohibited items.

These security measures follow explosions that occurred on the night of February 22nd near the 'Magnus' shopping center in Lviv. The detonation of improvised explosive devices resulted in the death of 23-year-old police officer Viktoriia Shpylka and injured 25 people, the majority of whom were police officers and National Guard servicemen. Authorities have already released surveillance footage showing preparations for the crime and provided details about a detained suspect.

The SBU Directorate in the Lviv region has called on citizens to be understanding of any potential inconveniences caused by the operation. They also emphasize the necessity of carrying personal identification documents at all times and adhering to the curfew.

The objective is to detect, prevent, and neutralize threats from intelligence and subversive activities against our state, and to increase the safety of citizens in the context of Russia's armed aggression against Ukraine.

The counterintelligence operation in Lviv is part of broader efforts by Ukrainian law enforcement to ensure public safety against a backdrop of escalating threats from Russia. Recent events, particularly the shopping center blasts, underscore the critical need for proactive security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The SBU and other services continue to work on enhancing security levels in cities that may be targets for sabotage groups.
