Ukraine's SBU Thwarts Over 14,000 Russian Cyberattacks: Defending Critical Infrastructure
Performance of Ukraine's Security Service in Countering Cyberattacks
According to Главком: Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has successfully neutralized more than 14,000 major cyberattacks and incidents targeting the country's central government resources and critical infrastructure, according to its Cyber Security Department. In 2025 alone, SBU cyber specialists repelled over 3,000 hostile attacks on Ukrainian systems. This relentless cyber warfare is a key component of the wider conflict, targeting the nation's operational backbone.
The vast majority of Russian attacks aimed to destroy digital services or destabilize strategically vital enterprises in the energy, transport, and defense sectors. In one documented instance, the official website of Ukraine's Territorial Defense Forces was hacked, with attackers posting false information on the resource.
Countering Hostile Attacks and Information Operations
Vladimir Karastelev, a representative of the SBU's Cyber Security Department, stated that the service is confronting the enemy on multiple fronts simultaneously:
- Countering specialized Russian units and associated hacker groups that regularly attack Ukraine.
- Actively opposing operations in the information space by neutralizing psychological and information warfare (PSYOP) campaigns, which Russia conducts not only against Ukraine but also against partner states.
Karastelev also emphasized the importance of not only defending but also conducting systematic proactive operations in hostile digital spaces. He noted that Ukraine is inflicting painful blows on the adversary, though details of these operations cannot currently be disclosed. - Vladimir Karastelev
The SBU's Cyber Security Department continues to work on protecting the nation's information and digital space, demonstrating readiness to repel threats. The scale of these attacks underscores the critical role of cyber defense in modern national security, where digital and physical battlefields are increasingly intertwined.
This data highlights the significant level of threat Ukraine faces under wartime conditions and the crucial importance of cyber protection for national security. Countering cyberattacks is a critical element of strategic defense, as successful attacks could have serious consequences for state governance and critical infrastructure. The SBU continues to refine its defense methods, emphasizing the vital integration of advanced technology into the security sphere.
