GRU Agent Caught in Donetsk for Directing Drone and Guided Bomb Attacks

GRU Operative Apprehended in Donetsk Region

According to 5 канал: The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has detained a GRU intelligence agent in Donetsk who was actively coordinating strikes using guided aerial bombs and drones targeting the Sloviansk area. The suspect, a resident of a frontline village who had evaded military conscription, came under Russian intelligence scrutiny due to his anti-Ukrainian comments posted in Telegram chats.

Following his recruitment, the agent collected detailed information on the positions of Ukrainian forces in Sloviansk and nearby districts. This data was saved on his smartphone as marked locations on Google Maps. SBU investigations revealed that he maintained communication with the Russian GRU through a liaison affiliated with the Joint Strategic Command of the Moscow Military District. They exchanged messages via a widely used messenger platform that supports anonymous accounts.

The SBU intercepted the agent early in his espionage activities, arresting him at home and seizing his mobile phone and tablet, which contained incriminating evidence. He has been formally charged under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code-state treason during martial law. Currently held without bail, the suspect faces life imprisonment and asset confiscation if convicted.

Additional Espionage Incidents

Previously, the SBU sentenced an FSB agent to 15 years in prison for spying on defense facilities in the Khmelnytskyi region. This individual, a local laborer, was apprehended in September 2025 while documenting a potential target. His motivation arose from financial desperation found through Telegram channels, leading to cooperation with Russian intelligence.

The primary objectives for these foreign operatives included:

• Defense manufacturing plants
• Units of Ukraine’s Defense Forces in western regions

Similar to the Donetsk suspect, these agents covertly photographed industrial sites, mapped their locations on Google Maps, captured screenshots, and transmitted collected intelligence to Russian handlers via messenger apps.

According to the SBU, “The spotter was a recruited enemy collaborator from a frontline village who avoided mobilization and attracted Russian intelligence attention through his anti-Ukrainian posts in Telegram chats, rarely leaving his home.”

Investigators confirmed that “the agent was in contact with the Russian GRU through a liaison connected to the Joint Strategic Command of the Moscow Military District, communicating via a popular messenger using anonymous profiles.”
